The Century Council is working across the country to improve hardcore drunk driving interlock laws. This week, the Virginia Senate unanimously passed two important bills that would enhance ignition interlock penalties.
S.B. 1463 ensures that repeat offenders who have had a previous DWI offense within 10 years will be ordered to install an ignition interlock device as a condition of license restoration. This bill will now go to the House of Delegates for consideration.
S.B. 889 would make operating a motor vehicle without a required ignition interlock device a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a maximum fine of $2,500. House Bill 1805 is identical to Senate Bill 889 and it passed the Virginia House of Delegates last week by unanimous vote.
The Century Council believes that improving ignition interlock laws and usage rates among hardcore drunk drivers is a top priority. Click here for more information on ignition interlocks and how they help reduce drunk driving.
