The Century Council applauds Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour for signing social host legislation to prevent underage drinking.
The new law, which goes into effect July 1, prohibits adults from knowingly allowing a party to take place at their residence if a minor obtains, possesses or consumes alcohol. The punishment will be a $1,000 fine and/or imprisonment for up to 90 days.
According to the Alcohol Policy Information System, a project of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Mississippi will join 27 other states with hosting laws. Great progress!
We thank Sen. David Blount and Rep. Richard Bennett for sponsoring this legislation that holds parents accountable for permitting underage drinking.
