We're pleased to support is DC SCORES, an organization promoting soccer, poetry and service-learning through afterschool programs across the Washington DC area. Below is a guest post from Cory Chimka, Program Director for DC SCORES:
Over 800 students descended on Trinity University last Saturday as the 17th annual DC SCORES Jamboree! got underway. The students created a rainbow on the athletic fields off Michigan Avenue, Northeast in their colorful jerseys representing 27 distinct schools. The day started with the elementary school championship games between the Bancroft Elementary and Howard Road Academy boys, and the Burrville Elementary and Brightwood Education Campus girls. Before long, all 27 teams were playing, spanning twelve fields, with DJ RBI helping to create a party atmosphere. Jamboree! Is the culminating event of the academic year in which DC SCORES provides a rich combination of arts, athletics, and academics during after school hours across the District of Columbia.
The day wasn’t all fun and games though. On their way to lunch and face-painting, the students stopped by a very popular table sponsored by the Century Council. The students learned that “you are what you drink,” practiced ways to say “No” to alcohol, and reflected on positive choices they’re making in their young lives.
Everyone’s favorite part was the bag of goodies they left the Ask, Listen, Learn table with to help them remember these lessons. The students clutched activity books, and picture frames, and beautiful neon sunglasses emblazoned on the side with “Say ‘YES’ to a healthy lifestyle and ‘NO’ to underage drinking. “ were a ubiquitous part of the event.
DC SCORES is proud of our partnership with the Century Council to help fight underage drinking
