U.S. Representative Jim Himes (D-CT) recently joined The Century Council for an Ask Listen Learn event at West Rocks Middle School in Norwalk, Connecticut. He sat down with Field Director Sarah Cissna to talk about how he and his family stay healthy.
Sarah: How did you maintain a healthy lifestyle while you were in middle and high school?
Jim: In high school I was on the tennis team and ran cross country. I wasn’t a big athlete, but I felt bad if I was just sitting at home watching tv.
Sarah: What about after high school?
Jim: I rowed crew when I was an undergraduate at Harvard, and I continued to row while I was at Oxford for graduate school. I still row as an adult here on the Mianus River near my home in Cos Cob.
Sarah: You travel a lot between Connecticut and Washington, DC. How do you maintain an active and healthy lifestyle that isn’t all about vending machine food?
Jim: My office in DC is in the Cannon Building, just a few blocks from the National Mall. I’ll run down the Mall to the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial. Getting out in the fresh air is a great way to recharge at the end of a long day. I attend a variety of events each week, and I try to choose fruits and veggies whenever I can.
Sarah: As the father of two girls, how do you help your family stay healthy?
Jim: My wife actually started rowing a few years ago after seeing me enjoy it for so long. We like to get outdoors as much as possible, often with our black lab, Bella.
