WASHINGTON, DC--While underage drinking and drunk driving fatalities are at historic record low levels it is important to recognize there is still more that can be done. Today, The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, recognized Richard Hanna (R-NY) with its 2012 Leadership Award. During his tenure in the U.S. Congress Rep. Richard Hanna has shown an outstanding commitment to fight drunk driving and underage drinking in New York’s 24th Congressional District.
Congressman Hanna is a leader in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking and a new partner for The Century Council. As part of Alcohol Awareness Month in April, he visited Strough Middle School in Rome, New York, and spoke to 400 7th grade students about the importance of making healthy life choices. He led the students in the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive game and encouraged students to say “yes” to a healthy lifestyle and “no” to underage drinking. Congressman Hanna reminded students that the decisions they make when they are young can affect the rest of their lives, and that parents, teachers and friends are excellent resources they can turn to for guidance.
Congressman Hanna’s leadership has been a tremendous asset in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking. In New York there were 36,578 driving under the influence arrests throughout 2010 while 67% of those included a driver with a blood alcohol content of .15% or more. 32% of kids aged 12-20 have reported drinking in the past month.
“Congressman Richard Hanna has been a tireless advocate for the people in New York’s 24th Congressional District,” said Ralph Blackman, President and CEO of The Century Council. “Congressman Hanna has truly worked diligently to address these important issues. We commend his leadership to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking by sending a clear and consistent message that it is illegal and will not be tolerated. No doubt his efforts have saved lives.”
