WASHINGTON, DC-- While underage drinking and drunk driving fatalities are at historic record low levels it is important to recognize there is still more that can be done. Today, The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, recognized New Jersey Attorney General Jeff Chiesa with its 2012 Leadership Award. During his tenure as the top law enforcement officer for the state, Attorney General Chiesa has shown an outstanding commitment to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking in making traffic safety a priority in New Jersey.
The Century Council has worked with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General for many years. We have been pleased to continue these efforts with Attorney General Chiesa. Earlier this year he brought numerous agencies and law enforcement departments together to kick off the Summer Shore Initiative. This effort is a high profile campaign that combines public education and enforcement to reduce underage drinking and illegal alcohol purchases on the Jersey Shore during the summer. The Summer Shore Initiative placed law enforcement officers in retail outlets to identify and deter underage alcohol purchases and provided immediate punishment to those who attempted to purchase alcohol illegally.
The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has been an important partner in the fight to eliminate them. There were 26,016 arrests related to driving under the influence in 2010 and 73% of those arrested were drivers with a blood alcohol content of .15% or higher. New Jersey also has seen 27% of kids aged 12-20 reporting alcohol consumption in the past month.
“Attorney General Chiesa has been a tireless advocate for the people of New Jersey,” said Ralph Blackman, President and CEO of The Century Council. “Attorney General Chiesa worked diligently to address these important issues in New Jersey. We commend his leadership to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking by sending a clear and consistent message that underage drinking is illegal and will not be tolerated. No doubt his efforts have saved lives.”
