In 2006, The Century Council, a national not-for-profit funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, committed its support for the exploration of advanced technologies to prevent drunk driving.
Today, The Century Council reaffirmed its longstanding position of support for this project and for The Roads Safe Act, sponsored by Senators Tom Udall (D-NM) and Bob Corker (R-TN).
Recent media reports suggest the technology likely would be set at 0.03 or 0.04 percent BAC and the devices are not 100 percent accurate.
We note that Senator Udall has firmly stated his intent of the legislation, “Clearly, such advanced technologies must win widespread public acceptance in order to be effective. They must be moderately priced, absolutely reliable and unobtrusive to sober drivers. They should be set at a level that would not prevent a driver whose BAC is less than the legal limit – which state law sets at .08 BAC for most drivers – from operating a vehicle. The aim is to stop drunk driving – not discourage responsible social drinking.”
We congratulate Senator Udall and Senator Corker on the inclusion of this legislation within S. 1813 (the Senate Transportation Reauthorization bill) which passed the Senate last week. This legislation has broad support from AAA, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Trucking Associations, Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS), Governors’ Highway Safety Association (GHSA), Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA), National Safety Council (NSC), Wine and Spirits Wholesalers Association (WSWA), and many other transportation groups.
