The Century Council Hosts First Annual Senate Awards Luncheon
Proud to Recognize Select Senate Members For Longstanding Commitment To Fight Drunk Driving and Underage Drinking
WASHINGTON, DC The Century Council hosted its first annual Senate Awards luncheon on Capitol Hill today to honor members of the U.S. Senate who have shown an outstanding commitment to fight drunk driving and underage drinking. The Council, a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking and funded by America's leading distillers, develops and implements innovative programs and public awareness campaigns, and promotes action through strategic partnerships.
Understanding the critical need to fight underage drinking, this year's Senate award recipients joined The Century Council to help educate youth and their parents and caregivers, about the importance of making responsible decisions regarding beverage alcohol. The Century Council's various educational programs target youth as young as middle school through college age students.
The Century Council 2002 Senate Award winners are as follows: Senator John Breaux (D-LA), Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH),
Senator Peter Domenici (R-NM), Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Senator Trent Lott (R-MS).
The Century Council 2002 Senate Award winners worked with The Century Council on three programs including Ready or Not: Talking With Kids About Alcohol®, Brandon Tells His Story, and Alcohol 101®. Ready or Not®, a community program, helps parents and other adults prevent underage drinking problems among middle-school age children (ages 10-14). The program is also available in a Spanish language version, Sin Rodeos®: Hablando con los niños sobre el alcohol.
Brandon Tells His Story is an award-winning video program for high school students that features Brandon Silveria, a permanently disabled young man who crashed his car after having a few drinks at age 17. On behalf of The Century Council, Brandon and his father Tony tour America's high schools full-time to educate students about the consequences of teen drinking. Brandon has addressed over one million students throughout the nation to-date.
Alcohol 101®, produced by The Century Council in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is a program for college-aged students that makes use of interactive computer CD-ROM technology to combat the excessive drinking behaviors sometimes found in campus life. In a user-friendly, non-judgmental style, the "virtual reality" program encourages students who drink to maintain personal control and safety by helping them to understand the consequences of harmful drinking and demonstrates that not drinking is also an option.
Launched in 1991, The Century Council is funded by America's leading distillers. The Council's mission is to promote responsible decision-making regarding beverage alcohol and discourage all forms of irresponsible consumption through education, communications, research, law enforcement and other programs.
