The Century Council wants parents across the country to make a New Year's Resolution to keep their teens safe and alcohol-free in 2004. The Council is providing tips to parents in an effort to prevent underage drinking and to highlight the strong influence that parents wield in their teens decisions to say no to alcohol. Last year, 2,902 youths under the age of 21 died in alcohol-related traffic fatalities, accounting for nearly 17% of all alcohol-related traffic fatalities on our nation's roads during 2002. Alcohol 101 Plus, a dynamic interactive CD-ROM program designed to stop the misuse of alcohol on campus, received the coveted FREDDIE Award in the category of Health and Wellness at the 29th Annual International Health and Medical Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles. The International Health and Medical Media Awards, also known as the "Oscars of Medicine," are recognized as a preeminent competition of educational health and medical media. Alcohol 101 Plus was also a finalist in the categories of Community Health and Behavioral Diseases. November 19, 2003
Senator Maziarz, retailers, and local law enforcement join The Century Council to launch new public awareness campaign to fight underage drinking. "65% of the youth surveyed said that they got the alcohol they drink from family and friends, meaning they got it from their parents, their friends' parents, older siblings or family members or older friends," said The Century Council's Pam Beer. Helping to launch an Educational Campaign to Combat Drunk Driving is a colorful van dubbed the Blood Alcohol Educator (BAE). The "BAE cybervan" is traveling the country to distribute The Blood Alcohol Educator (BAE) CD-ROM, a credit-card sized CD-ROM in both Spanish and English that educates users on how alcohol affects their Blood Alcohol Concentration level.
