U.S. Representative Shelly Berkley (D-1) and The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, partnered today to bring a life-saving lesson about the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving to students at Cimarron Memorial High School today. To highlight the back to school season, Brandon Silveria, a young man who was involved in an alcohol-related crash at age 17 just before his high school prom, and his father Tony will speak to students about the importance of making the right choice about alcohol and if students are under the age of 21 the only responsible decision is not to drink. "Key to addressing the problem of underage drinking is having a sense for where youth obtain the alcohol they drink. In a recent survey commissioned by The Century Council, we asked teens, 'Where do you get the alcohol that you drink?' 65% of the youth surveyed said that they got the alcohol they drink from family and friends, meaning they got it from their parents, their friends' parents, older siblings or family members or older friends," said Shannon Adams of the Century Council. As the Maryland House Judiciary Committee considers drunk driving legislation today, the Coalition to Fight Hardcore Drunk Driving and the Maryland Impaired Driving Coalition held a press conference to urge the Maryland General Assembly to pass comprehensive drunk driving legislation that would significantly improve the state's drunk driving laws. In order to evaluate Alcohol 101 Plus and to assess future needs, The Century Council is currently seeking proposals to complete an independent, scientific outcome evaluation of the program. This evaluation will assist us in our efforts to more effectively implement the program in a manner consistent with our goal of educating college-age students about making safe and responsible decisions regarding alcohol. "According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 84 youths under the age of 21 died in alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Tennessee 2002, a decrease of over 1% from 2001. While this shows improvement, Brandon’s message is an important, powerful reminder of what can happen.
