Development Process: Judicial Education
The Century Council is a leader in the development of innovative approaches to assist communities in their efforts to eliminate drunk driving and underage drinking. We constantly monitor the environment, through primary and secondary research, to analyze trends and identify variables that may have an impact in these important issues. This research provides the solid foundation that characterizes the development of our initiatives.
Throughout the years, we have worked with numerous nationally-recognized experts in various fields to develop programs and other outreach initiatives. We also have a long tradition of collaboration with government agencies.
Hardcore Drunk Driving Judicial Guide – A Case Study on Reducing Drunk Driving Through Effective Adjudication & Sentencing
In 2002, along with the National Association of State Judicial Educators, we embarked on an ambitious collaboration to examine the judiciary's critical role in reducing hardcore drunk driving and possible strategies to increase its effectiveness.
The award-winning Hardcore Drunk Driving Judicial Guide highlights effective strategies, tactics, and programs that can be implemented across the nation to reduce this dangerous problem. It is designed to serve as a resource for judges and judicial educators as they address the complexities of reducing drunk driving in our communities. The guide includes the following elements:
- Role of judicial leadership
- Importance of a comprehensive approach in dealing with hardcore drunk drivers that includes: swift identification, certain punishment, and effective treatment
- Role of effective sanctions, strong case management, and administrative structure as tools for effective adjudication of the hardcore drunk driver.
In addition to the Hardcore Drunk Driving Judicial Guide, an aggressive judicial education initiative has been implemented which emphasizes interactive learning techniques employing a panel of judges, subject matter experts, and a judicial educator. To date, this workshop has been presented to over 3,000 judges in 36 states.
Most recently, we were awarded the prestigious Peter K. O'Rourke Special Achievement Award by the Governors Highway Safety Association in recognition for our Judicial Education Program's valuable contribution to the field of highway safety.
