B4UDrink Awareness

December 2008

The statistics above are disturbing – to say the least. The Century Council, together with the Congressional Stop DUI Caucus, hosted its annual holiday event to address drunk driving and BAC awareness yesterday on Capitol Hill. With the help of B4UDrink’s Virtual Bar and some Fatal Vision Goggles, we helped our audience to better understand the ways that alcohol affects individuals.

Decade-long Commitment to Alcohol Education on Campus

November 2008

The Century Council will attend the US Department of Education’s National Meeting on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention in Higher Education. For over 10 years, The Century Council has assisted colleges and universities with innovative strategies to promote alcohol education on campus. Its commitment to developing a comprehensive approach that includes research- based educational materials for students, parents, faculty, administrators and other members of the campus community while supporting enforcement of the legal drinking age provides a solid foundation to our efforts to curb underage and binge drinking among college students.

Most recently, we partnered with the American Advertising Federation to sponsor their 2009 National Students Advertising Competition. Through this national competition, students will contribute to solving the problem of dangerous alcohol overconsumption among college students by presenting new approaches to communicate with their peers about this important issue.

The Century Council programs highlighted at this year’s conference include: Alcohol 101 Plus™ Online, Promising Practices: Campus Alcohol Strategies, Back on Trac, and the Parents You’re Not Done Yet brochures.

National Teen Driver Safety Week

October 19-25, 2008

The Century Council is a longtime advocate for increasing safety on our country's roadways, and we support the goals and ideals of National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 19-25, 2008). This year we partnered with the National Transportation Safety Board, the Ad Council, Nationwide Insurance, and the American School Counselor Association to distribute an interactive web-based game that highlights how distractions make it increasingly difficult for a teen driver to safely operate their vehicle. The game features images and messages that teens can relate to which we hope will remind them to drive safely. Please join our effort by sending the game to a teen and encourage them to send it to a friend.

Washington Area Girls Soccer Tournament

October 11-13, 2008

The Century Council will be sponsoring the Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) Tournament taking place October 11-13, in the Greater Washington DC area. The tournament will feature more than 5,000 girls from across the country in age groups ranging from U-11 to U-19. Continuing our strong relationship with the National Soccer Hall of Fame, we will be sharing a tent and display area and distributing promotional items and educational materials. We also were a featured sponsor of the Dulles National Soccer Tournament that occurred August 23-24 in Northern Virginia. Through both tournaments we will be able to educate more than 10,000 youth about the dangers of underage drinking and the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle.

Sixth Annual Congressional Awards Reception

July 2008

In July, The Century Council hosted its sixth annual Congressional Awards reception on Capitol Hill where we awarded 37 Members of Congress for their ongoing dedication to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Understanding the scope of this national problem, this year's award recipients joined us to help educate youth and their parents from middle school all the way up to college-aged students about responsible decision-making concerning beverage alcohol. Some Members launched our initiatives in their district, others signed onto the Council-supported HR 4453 (The Underage Drinking Prevention Act), and several Members did both. A complete list of award recipients can be found here.
