From their experience and reviews of the professional literature, the Co-Directors and Advisory Panel established that a comprehensive campus effort is essential to maximize the probability of addressing alcohol problems. They identified ten categories that constitute a comprehensive campus effort, as well as seven criteria against which to evaluate each program.
Program Categories
- Assessment and Evaluation
Needs assessments, evaluation strategies, instruments, ways of using findings, dissemination of results, and preparation of written materials. more
- Awareness and Information
Media campaigns, awareness weeks, alternative activities, written correspondence, social marketing, radio and television announcements, and written materials. more
- Curriculum
Courses on alcohol related issues, infusion of alcohol and associated topics in existing courses, guest lecturers in class, and practical experiences for students in conjunction with coursework. more
- Enforcement
Campus police, security and other enforcement personnel who implement campus policies and state laws, and the campus's disciplinary process and judicial system. more
- Environmental and Targeted Approaches
Efforts designed to affect the campus climate overall, efforts focused on the unique needs of subgroups such as first year students, athletes, and fraternity/sorority members. more
- Peer-Based Initiatives
Strategies implemented by peers to assist or educate other students with workshops, discussions, advising, theater, and other helpful initiatives. more
- Policies and Implementation
Determination of campus wide policies, periodic review of implementation and effectiveness, and dissemination of incorporated elements. more
- Staffing and Resources
Full time and part time personnel identified to provide leadership on the campus alcohol prevention effort as well as physical and material resources which assist. more
- Support and Intervention Services
Assistance for students who are becoming harmfully involved with alcohol, including early identification, intervention, referral, counseling, and ongoing support efforts. more
- Training
Designed for students, faculty, and staff to assist in planning and implementing programs and related helpful services for the campus prevention effort. more
